Wrestlemania 36 Picks and Breakdown

By on

It’s been awhile! While we may not have NBA, MLB, or Tennis, DraftKings and FanDuel are finding innovative ways for us to continue playing DFS. It’s been a hard time for all of us, and hopefully everyone is staying safe and healthy. While we may not be getting large GPP’s for Wrestlemania, a free $5K Prize Pool from FanDuel is something, and why not give a little write up for those interested?

A look at the scoring, based on a Showdown format

Initial take here. We’re not interested in who ultimately wins, although, logic will say Pin/Submission attempts and Signature Move Hits will ultimately showcase winners outscoring losers. Foreign Object Used will ultimately play a pretty important role in scoring, especially considering three bouts have No Disqualification stipulations, which means anything goes. A fourth match is a Fatal Five Way, which also carries No DQ rules (although that’s generally a hidden stipulation, and rarely utilized). For those who may not follow WWE or Wrestling, Putting Someone Through A Table doesn’t necessarily need to happen in a No DQ Match, as going through an Announce Table isn’t against the rules. Yes, the event is taped, but rumor is they taped everyone to win their respective matches to avoid anyone leaking results, which doesn’t even really matter, as wins and losses aren’t scored. We have no idea which matches will take place on Saturday or Sunday as of now, but lets get into some of the card

WWE Championship: Brock Lesnar (c) vs Drew McIntyre

  • What We Know
    • Brock will likely be off until August (Summerslam)
    • McIntyre won the Royal Rumble and is in the midst of a major push
    • This was likely to be the coronation of McIntyre as the next mega star, but plans may change with an empty arena
  • How Does This Go?
    • Expect both to get some offense in. Likely Lesnar dominating early, and McIntyre rallying for a win
  • Worth Rostering?
    • McIntyre

Universal Championship: Goldberg (c) vs Braun Strowman

  • What We Know
    • This was meant to be Goldberg vs Roman Reigns, but Reigns refused to work the match due to health reasons
    • Strowman is the replacement, and it’s pretty unlikely he goes over with zero build
    • Goldberg’s contract had him working JUST Super ShowDown in Saudi Arabia last month and Wrestlemania
  • How Does This Go?
    • I’m thinking they work a new deal with Goldberg as the idea of Spear vs Spear was a pretty big money contest, which likely means this ends in a similar way Goldberg vs Bray Wyatt did. Spear, Spear, Spear, Jackhammer, 1, 2, 3.
  • Worth Rostering?
    • If they do in fact book this match like they did vs Wyatt, Goldberg could very well be the top scorer on the slate

Raw Women’s Championship: Becky Lynch (c) vs Shayna Baszler

  • What We Know
    • Becky has held the title since last Wrestlemania, when she defeated Ronda Rousey and Charlotte Flair
    • Shayna is about to get an even bigger push than they gave Ronda Rousey, having eliminated all other five competitors in Elimination Chamber to earn this match
    • The storyline here is Becky having beaten Rousey for the title a year ago, and wanting to do the same to another member of the Four Horsewomen, who poses as an even greater threat
  • How Does This Go?
    • Becky has gotten a bit stale. They’ve already begun moving on from The Man gimmick. With Shayna being pushed to the moon, she wins
  • Worth Rostering?
    • While it won’t be a squash given Becky’s stature, Shayna should offer a lot of Submission Attempt, Signature Move Hit, and Reversal Upside

NXT Women’s Championship: Rhea Ripley (c) vs Charlotte Flair

  • What We Know
    • Ripley challenged Flair to choose her after winning the Royal Rumble
    • Charlotte winning would mean switching to the NXT Brand, which from a business standpoint, makes little sense right now
    • Ripley is also in the midst of a pretty big push
  • How Does This Go?
    • I honestly have no idea. They could view the ratings dip vs AEW as a reason to put the title on Charlotte to increase viewership, but it just doesn’t make sense to do that
    • If the event weren’t behind closed doors, I could see Ronda Rousey making her return here, to screw Charlotte, and possibly plant the seeds for the future Four Horsewomen vs Four Horsewomen clash, but with the current situation, who knows
  • Worth Rostering?
    • These two likely have a longer match than Becky/Shayna, so it’s possible there’s more upside from either.

Smackdown Women’s Championship: Bayley (c) vs Sasha Banks vs Lacey Evans vs Naomi vs Tamina

  • What We Know
    • This is an elimination match, so there’s definitely some upside in the eventual winner, assuming she ends up with the most eliminations
    • Bayley, sans five days, has held the title for nearly a year
    • This was originally supposed to be Bayley vs Sasha Banks, but plans changed with the Coronavirus pandemic
  • How Does This Go?
    • There’s two ways this could go. One, Sasha turns on Bayley early, and ultimately prevails the winner. Two, it comes down to Sasha and Bayley, with Sasha turning and winning
  • Worth Rostering?
    • I think Sasha is the only one who makes sense, but I’d suspect they try and make Bayley come out looking strong, and possibly the same with Naomi, which could limit Sasha’s upside. Definitely have her behind Shayna and Ripley

Intercontinental Championship: Sami Zayn (c) vs Daniel Bryan

  • What We Know
    • This was 100% not the plan heading into Wrestlemania before the Coronavirus had them scrambling
    • Bryan’s contract is up in September, so they aren’t pushing him
    • Bryan and Drew Gulak have formed a new alliance, and Gulak needed to defeat Sami Zayn to earn Bryan this match (which Bryan helped Gulak win)
  • How Does This Go?
    • They could give Bryan one last run with a Title, but my interest here is the new Bryan/Gulak friendship. With Bryan having helped Gulak win, to earn this match for him, I sense a potential heel turn coming from Gulak (who had been a heel prior to this alliance forming), which will give Bryan a feud leading up to Summerslam, which would likely be his last high profile match as a full time performer
  • Worth Rostering?
    • I do like both Bryan and Zayn as this should be a technical wrestling match, which should involve reversals, submission attempts, and unique pin attempts, but you’re not Match Stacking them

Raw Tag Team Championship: Street Profits (Montez Ford/Angelo Dawkins) (c) vs Angel Garza and TBD

  • What We Know
    • Andrade has pulled out of this match, claiming injury, and we do not know who Garza’s partner will be
    • This match was thrown together to get Garza (and Andrade) on the card
  • How Does This Go?
    • Street Profits win
  • Worth Rostering?
    • Absolutely not. FanDuel has these competitors individually, so the cost outweighs any potential production from anyone here

Firefly Funhouse Match (No Disqualification): Bray Wyatt vs John Cena

  • What We Know
    • This will be a Firefly Funhouse Match, so I have no idea what that means, but it’s going to be No Disqaulification
    • Cena, whether this were a regular Wrestlemania or not, was likely going MIA afterwards regardless
  • How Does This Go?
    • Wyatt needs a win here. His Fiend character has been to target those who have made him a failure in the past, and ultimately prevail this go-around. Cena fits that billing, and having lost all his momentum vs Goldberg, a win over the actual G.O.A.T. would be a good re-start.
  • Worth Rostering?
    • This is one of three matches I actually think a match stack is in play. Given the No DQ nature, both competitors likely utilize foreign objects, with a number of pin/submission attempts, kickouts, and a lot of signature moves

Boneyard Match (No Disqualification): The Undertaker vs AJ Styles

  • What We Know
    • What’s a Boneyard Match? It’s a buried alive match, supposedly in a graveyard setting, so it won’t take place in a ring, like the Cena/Wyatt match
    • Undertaker is 23-2 at Wrestlemania
  • How Does This Go?
    • If this is an actual buried alive match, it makes little sense for Undertaker to win, as generally, the loser of the Buried Alive Match goes on a hiatus. Taker is also 1-3 all time in Singles Buried Alive Matches. I’d expect Styles to win here.
  • Worth Rostering?
    • Both are in play. Alike the Cena/Wyatt match, the No DQ stipulation gives both some major upside. Remember, those in regular singles matches (especially title matches), are highly unlikely to utilize foreign objects, so there could be a slight edge in these No DQ matches. I have this as the #3 Match Stack behind Orton/Edge and Cena/Wyatt, respectively.

Last Man Standing Match (No Disqualification): Randy Orton vs Edge

  • What We Know
    • Edge’s comeback match
    • Probably the most invested storyline from the writers this Wrestlemania
    • Potential Main Event Night #1
  • How Does This Go?
    • Mayhem. Total mayhem. This story has gotten personal, involving Edge’s wife and kids, with the storyline built around Orton trying to end Edge’s career (again) to save him from himself. The Last Man Standing stipulation should involve many chairs, kendo sticks, tables, and possibly ladders. Orton brought up his Hardcore Match with Mick Foley from years ago, which should hint at possible Hardcore tactics. I see this being one of the longest worked matches on the card, with a number of long nine counts, which will mean A LOT of Spears, RKO’s, chair shots, table spots, etc. Edge likely wins, as that’s the only logical way to complete this story.
  • Worth Rostering?
    • *Insert Daniel Bryan yes chat gif*. If this match is given 15+ minutes, which I don’t see how they wouldn’t under Last Man Standing rules, they will both likely end up with the most points on the slate

Singles Match: Seth Rollins vs Kevin Owens

  • What We Know
    • The storyline is based around Rollins’ success at Wrestlemania, and Owens’ lack of success
  • How Does This Go?
    • Logical storytelling based off the above says Owens wins, but this isn’t your usual Wrestlemania. Rollins has lost a ton of momentum since his heel turn, and now AOP (his henchmen) are off TV with an injury, so a loss here could be tragic for him. I’m not even sure where Owens would go from here coming out with a win, so he can probably afford to eat the loss
  • Worth Rostering?
    • No. Rollins is way too expensive. They may work a long match, but from this DFS standpoint, I’m not sure either are in play.

Singles Match: King Corbin vs Elias

  • What We Know
    • Gronk. Yes, Rob Gronkowski “booked” this match
    • Corbin may have murdered Elias on FOX last week
    • Nobody cares about this match
  • How Does This Go?
    • Gronk costs Corbin the match, leading to their blowoff match at Summerslam in Boston
  • Worth Rostering?
    • Nope

Singles Match: Dolph Ziggler vs Otis

  • What We Know
    • The writers are actually invested in this story, as it dates back to the beginning of January
    • If it were a regular Wrestlemania, this is likely on the Pre-Show, or not on the card all together
    • Mandy Rose will be at ringside
  • How Does This Go?
    • This is the classic, love triangle storyline. Mandy Rose will likely play a major role in this one, and this really reminds me of the Trish Stratus/Christian/Jericho story from Wrestlemania 20. Jericho was going after Trish, who seemed interested, but Christian ALSO wanted Trish, which led to their match. Trish was at ringside, in Jericho’s corner, but ultimately turned on Jericho, and ending up with Christian. Considering Mandy is a natural heel, but currently a tweener, with them teasing her potentially choosing Otis, a true heel turn, has to be coming
  • Worth Rostering?
    • No interest in either

Singles Match: Aleister Black vs Bobby Lashley

  • What We Know
    • This was thrown together to get Black (who’s being pushed) and Lashley (too big a name) on the card
  • How Does This Go?
    • Complete Squash for Black
  • Worth Rostering?
    • Not at all. Likely Black picking up one Signature Move and Pin Attempt
